Whoa, where have you been back reading, anon. I thought I hadn’t touched on Bates in quite some time.
I made a long, tedious post about this the last time someone asked me, but in a nutshell, it boils down to: lack of interest, his violent nature concerns me, his so-called ‘honour’ frustrates me, his multiple lies don’t impress me, and the way he pushes everyone away is, personally, very tiresome.
But! You say. Thomas and O’Brien are violent! Thomas and O’Brien lie! The thing is, with Thomas and O’Brien I see their motivations and I’m intrigued by them. I’ve yet to see any real reasons for Bates’ behaviour other than he’s not the great person everyone else thinks he is.
He’s just a character that rubs me the wrong way. What can you do?
