downtonians
#
a relationship that should have been more explored tbh
#
i have a lot to say but the most important thing is that
#
i love the image of edith with books
#
because edith's 'power' in the household comes from information
#
and this is exactly how o'brien (and thomas) contrive power as well
#
amongst the lower classes they have to use information
#
people like robert and cora and violet all rely on their authority
#
same with carson and to a lesser extent mrs. hughes (only because she's also willing to deal in information)
#
(but she does rely on her position as well)
#
in fact carson and cora and robert all withhold information
#
whereas o'brien for example collects and divests it as she sees fit
#
and edith has been so disconnected by her family in many ways
#
she has been pushed so far to the side that she has to operate like the outsiders like the servants
#
outsiders because this is also how carlisle operated (see: spymaster)
#
but not someone like isobel who tries to rely on her authority - she just doesn't have any
#
so edith has adapted i guess
#
i don't know what i'm saying anymore
#
edith can be the real spymaster
#
librarian of secrets
#
and really nice floral shirts
